Additional Thoughts…

“The wicked flee when none pursueth.”
Quote from Proverbs 28:1 that opens True Grit (2010).

Another interesting remake by the Coen brothers, True Grit (2010) was already destined for greatness before it even came to theaters. While the original 1969 version of True Grit starred “The Duke” better known as John Wayne, the Coens’ version of True Grit (2010) featured Jeff Bridges, better known as “The Dude”. Putting Jeff Bridges in the Rooster Cogburn role would obviously attract the Coen brothers’ loyal viewers not to mention other fans of The Big Lebowski (1998), even the ones who might not have gone to see a western film.

Obviously the Coen brothers have the secret formula locked down because True Grit (2010) grossed over $150 MILLION at the box office. And although it did not win any Oscars per se, the film was actually nominated for ten Academy Awards. But the fun doesn’t stop there. According to website SceneSmoking.org, True Grit (2010) delivered ALMOST TWO BILLION viewer impressions of tobacco — the most out of any Coen brothers’ film to date. [A tobacco impression = 1 viewer watching 1 appearance of tobacco.]

Back in the original film True Grit (1969) big names like Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper were part of the cast, however most of the tobacco incidents were delivered by none other than The Duke himself, super ultra mega star John Wayne. In Hollywood and in real life, John Wayne was “bigger than life” as they say. Besides standing almost seven feet tall, The Duke was notorious for smoking cigarettes in dozens of his films. He also had a lung removed.

“You must pay for everything in this world, one way or another… There is nothing free except the grace of god.”

The original movie contained very minimal amounts of smoking (relatively speaking) so I’m guessing that the Coen brothers probably figured that at least the same amount of tobacco (or more) would be needed for their remake. Tobacco incidents that appear in the Coens’ version of True Grit (2010) were delivered primarily by infamous actors Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. It’s kind of funny but Jeff Bridges rolls & smokes his own cigarettes and Matt Damon smokes a large decorative pipe. The first time you see Matt Damon he is lighting up his pipe whilst relaxing on a porch; the camera tracking past him showing the young girl’s point of view, and Matt Damon’s face glowing warmly from the match light. As I mentioned before, most actors would probably do just about anything to work with the Coen brothers, and obviously Mr. Good Will Hunting is no exception.

And don’t worry, the Coen brothers’ definitely kept that old gag around where the young girl helps to hand-roll a cigarette for the much older Rooster Cogburn. This event actually happens in the original book and the 1969 film, so why wouldn’t the Coen brothers want to keep that joke rolling? Like, duhhhhh! Immediately after the young girl delivers the famous “They tell me you’re a man with true grit” titular line she snatches a cigarette away from Jeff Bridges just to be a bitch and finish rolling it for him. “Let me do that,” she exclaims followed by “Your makings are too dry!” Just as in both the original book by Charles Portis and the 1969 film, the Coen brothers were able to maintain that simple connection between two characters who are worlds apart — a connection over tobacco of all things.
