EDITION Buena Vista Home Entertainment DVD released March 11, 2008
MOVIE SUMMARY A guy finds some money and goes on the run from a psychopathic killer.
TOBACCO IN SHORT Josh Brolin meets a sexy woman smoking a cigarette beside a hotel swimming pool plus occasional ashtrays.
POSSIBLE SMOKESCREENS (?) The ultra-violence and bloody gun deaths make it easy to overlook the dozens of ashtrays that appear. And Josh Brolin’s death is portrayed like a missing scene that didn’t even make it into the final cut. WTF?

Additional Thoughts…

When it was released, No Country for Old Men (2007) caused quite a stir in the media in terms of the graphic ultra-violence. Though the film features huge name actors like Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson & Javier Bardem, the pacing is often very slow at times — you know, being in a desert in Texas and all — but the film always remains intriguing in that Coen brothers kinda way. A real “gettin back to yer roots” kind of flick, the psychotic behaviors and the Texas landscapes were definitely reminiscent of the Coen brothers’ first feature film Blood Simple (1984). One of the major differences this time was that the Coen brothers actually won the Oscar for Best Picture for their efforts. Really, for this crazy picture, they won the the biggest Academy Award?!

In truth, No Country for Old Men was not entirely crafted by the Coen brothers alone… The film was actually based on a novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy. Like other instances where the Coens’ are inspired by work that features instances of tobacco, this book was no exception. Perhaps when they read No Country for Old Men for the first time and saw all of the different tobacco references already printed on several pages, it was possible that the Coen brothers figured that this story — complete with all its bloody violence & blatant tobacco use — was seriously ripe for the picking. Believe it or not, the original source novel actually contained many random tobacco instances that were left out of the Coens’ final movie. I’m not sure why, but obviously the Coens decided not to flood this movie with tobacco like some of their other films.

Tommy Lee Jones: What is it Torbet says about truth and justice?

Woman: We dedicate ourselves daily anew. Something like that.

Tommy Lee Jones: I’m gonna commence dedicating myself twice daily. Might come to three times before it’s all over.

Interestingly enough, when you pop in the DVD for No Country for Old Men (2007) the first thing that plays is a short musical anti-tobacco segment: “You don’t always die from tobacco” by Truth etc. You know that one where the guy is holding the vibrator up to his vocal cords when he sings. Yeah, that one. I guess that is supposed to balance out the tobacco incidents in the following feature film? Yeah right, not by a long shot — especially if you compare the number of DVD sales to the original box office figures. Honestly, this minuscule ad appearing before this movie is about as impactful as those other tiny mentions in the end credits where a studio didn’t receive any money for the onscreen depiction of tobacco.

In this film, the everyman character is a welder played by actor Josh Brolin. “If it can be welded, I can weld it.” Although you never actually see him weld anything. One time, when Josh Brolin’s character is out hunting in the desert, he discovers the aftermath of a gunfight and a suitcase full of money. After taking the money home, Josh Brolin’s character is on the run for his life.

At some point during the film, you see the well worn back pocket of Josh Brolin’s jeans and what looks like the outline of a chewing tobacco or snuff tin… But you never see Josh Brolin take a chew. Toward the end of the movie, Brolin arrives a motel where a woman laying next to a pool hits on him whilst smoking and drinking. Brolin turns down her advances and ends up dead in the next scene. Hmmm.

Woman: Hey mister sportin’ goods.

Josh Brolin: Hey yourself.

Woman: You a sport?

Josh Brolin: Yeah, that’s me.

Woman: I got beers in my room.

Josh Brolin: Oh well Ima, waitin’ on my wife.

Woman: Oh, that’s who you keep looking out the window for?

Josh Brolin: Mmm, half.

Woman: What else then?

Josh Brolin: Just looking for what’s coming.

Woman: Yeah, but no one ever sees that… There! That’s what’s coming. I’ll bring the ice chest out here, you can stay married.

Josh Brolin: No, I, I know what beer leads to.

Woman: Ha ha, beer leads to more beer.

Oh yeah, and that random tobacco pipe hanging in a hunting store that I mentioned earlier actually appears in this movie at incident #31 listed above.
